A Captive Line Up for Art Hearts Fashion NYFW - SFS New York Edition

I don't like to line up; no one likes to queue, who wants to stand in an orderly fashion while waiting to see something new? Well sometimes it is the only way to get what you want and for Arts Hearts Fashion it's two lines across the street from the venue and mind you you don't invite the wrath of the door man for stepping out of line!!! At least there was a captive audience of fashion lovers many of whom caught my eye and some of whom I decided to photograph - some even said no! Or was that somewhere else - I honestly can't remember although it was only a couple weeks ago. I tell you two weeks in Manhattan is like a month anywhere else - exhausting! Big thanks to White Caviar Life for this superb engagement, go check them out straight after you are done here - another link at the bottom of the page - on with the pictures! Stories of Change with the KODAK EKTRA

Top night out in Dumbo, Brooklyn (yes Dumbo really exists!) at Usagi Gallery. I'm going to be a bit lazy and just for once simply quote the gallery page "Kodak Ektra will present Stories of Change. This part of the exhibition will feature images captured on the KODAK Ektra Smartphone by three influential female photographers — Nicola Bailey, Renell Medrano and Jen Steele. Stories of Change is a thematic study of New York culture, society and population, showing how photography can capture and influence social trends." Congratulations to my friend, Nicola, Renell and Jen and a huge thank you for the invite and not actually collapsing when she saw I made it to the show ;-) Beautiful work from all photographers; and although it's not about the equipment. Kodak seem to have done well with this new camera-phone; the prints were great. And for anyone of my generation who grew up with those yellow boxes, film and cameras, to see Kodak back in the game and supporting photographers and photography is just fantastic too! Useful links at the bottom of the page; and more street fashion to come, so stay tuned - follow on Facebook. And now here's some shots of the night.

Street Fashion Sydney - Peachy Pink MOMA NYC

It's a big call to draw ones eyeballs off the walls of MOMA NYC that are literally swimming in masterpieces of 20th century art. These two young women certainly did it for me - love that eye make-up too, brilliant!

Leather in the Line-Up - Art Hearts Fashion - NYFW

I'm not a huge fan of  lining up for anything really; or, queuing as we say in Australia. But sometimes there is just no other way to be where you want to be other than standing in line with everyone else. On the plus side at least while waiting there is a fashionista audience one can ask to grab some shots of. Loved meeting fashion illustrator Jovan Rosario and friend, like us, waiting in line for the opening night show at Art Hearts Fashion; the Angel Orensanz Center in Norfolk Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Thanks guys, love your look! - useful links at the bottom of the page; and more fashion to come, so stay tuned - follow on Facebook too!

SFS New York Edition - Fashion Gods Smile at Union Square

And they also ride the subway so there you go - we both alighted at Union Square. Thanks Lynn Yaeger for sparing me some time on what must surely be a very busy schedule. Perhaps it was me asking for Street Fashion Sydney that created that smile.

Purvi Doshi at Art Hearts Fashion; New York Fashion Week 2017

Yes the lure of the long haul flight this week sees me in New York for the very first time - yes what a year it has been. Once again I am on assignment shooting for White Caviar Life; though right now that also includes us attending some New York Fashion Week shows which I am able to put out as soon as I can. Yes take an afternoon nap whenever you can, it really helps! But enough of the preamble; tonight we were down at the Angel Orensanz Center in Norfolk Street which is a super funky historic church building. Although there were three parades and a blistering electronic violin performance opening by Sarah Charness; I want to kick off my coverage with the beautiful, colourful and sustainability crafted garments by Purvi Doshi from India. She is a proponent of slow and eco friendly fashion which is certainly something we need a lot more of. The theme for the range was living peacefully together with nature. I thought the hand stitched designs and elaborate embroidery just oh so romantic. But enough of me, here's my shots from the runway so you can decide for yourselves - useful links at the bottom of the page; and more fashion to come, so stay tuned - follow on Facebook too!

Catherine Loiret; French Individualism & Luxury Leather on the Left Bank

Portrait of Catherine Loiret on Rue Amélie Paris, France. Photography by Kent Johnson for Street Fashion Sydney - Paris Edition.
On the left bank of Paris not far along the bustling Parisian fashion street Rue Saint-Dominique you come to a narrow side street, the charming Rue Amélie where I was recently staying. And it's here under the omnipresent Tour Eiffel, along with with restaurants and small hotels, a theatre and a gift shop; that one morning I came across the French boutique leather goods maker Catherine Loiret. How had I missed this shop before? I know; I was always walking the other way; but not on this morning. Here was a shop that I could easily tell had quality, hand made - just a little quirky - fashion handbags, and while it was not open just yet I was determined to drop back in when it was and check it out properly for myself.

Rue Saint-Dominique
So here I am with next to no French beyond "Bonjour Madame" and "parlez vous Anglais?" conducting an impromptu interview of sorts with artist and designer Catherine Loiret her very self. And here is some of what I learnt. Catherine created the kind of bag she wanted for herself, something more personal than what was already available in the luxury leather goods market. She draws on her experience from working with the likes of HERMES and creates bags that are very flexible; and when I say flexible I mean reconfigurable, in look and use, her "Bagasutra" says it all really, and all made in France. Anyway that's over on her website  and you can take a look for yourself. It was lovely meeting a knowledgeable and creative designer, and to just stand in a shop full of beautiful colourful pieces, breathing in the leather and looking at her personal work space and bits and pieces of her craft. You can always tell a real artist when you meet them, they know what they do intimately and although it is an overused term, Catherine clearly has a real passion for her designs. So if you are in Paris looking for some unique luxury you won't see in every international airport; taking a trip to Rue Amélie should certainly be on your list. And thank you Catherine for taking time out of your day and chatting with me; a most enjoyable Paris experience indeed.
