Or maybe that is simply the power of protest. We certainly need a LOT more protest NOW in these strange times.

Shirley, Smith & Jones 2024 at Shop Gallery Glebe.

ON NOW - The latest iteration of the Shirley, Smith & Jones art exhibitions opened last night at Shop Gallery, 121 Glebe Point Road Glebe, Sydney. It's the first time I have made it to an opening there; though I've seen a previous exhibition. James Scanlon presented a short opening speech 'heckleing is fine but you will need to speak up, I'm my hearings going, if you want to heckle and a response, maybe put your hand up first so I can read your lips' He then posited that the series of shows may be an Art Movement - 'Old Romantics' but the work is serious if not with a capital S, even if the opening light hearted. I was mostly there for Michael Shirley's 40+ years of Film based photography well no choice in the beginning but he's still shooting film. 23-28 August 2024

Gene A’Hern - The Storm that Grew Us - at Cassandra Bird gallery

Opening night at Cassandra Bird art gallery for Gene A’Hern 'The Storm that Grew Us,' A show which was like a trip into a stormy Theosophical marvel. I loved the colours, I loved the mark making, I liked the storm. To my eye it's a tour de force though 20th century art movements that loved colour - seen through the eyes of Gene A’Hern and made new and fresh - because that's what storms do, they blow away the old and the stagnant and replace it with something fresh, something new - though sometimes that does involve a little pain. There are also works with washes of colour threaded with yarn, like large wall rugs, tapestries, or a craft kit on steroids, something that could so easily go horribly wrong but does not. Instead we have craft and art, the colours continuing their spiritual journey with a hint of retro hitching a ride.

I really like the work, and the gallery. Gene was kind enough to allow me to attempt a portrait at the opening. Thank you! I hoped to put some of the vision I saw in the show together with the artist.

Ante Badzim - Middle Beauty at VANDAL

Thursday afternoon I rang my friend Rod and asked him if he would like to come along to an exhibition of pictures taken in the Middle East. Now Rod often seems-to-be flying around the world shooting historic Muslim Architecture with a large format film camera - so no surprise, he said 'I'll see you there'. Of course who hasn't been seduced by the idea of travelling and seeing the ancient architecture of these sun drenched lands? Unfortunately I've only managed a transfer at Dubai airport so I needed to be doing my tour by proxy.. I was looking forward to seeing Ante Badzim's exhibition Middle Beauty.
Portrait of Ante Badzim - Middle Beauty at VANDAL. Photography by Kent Johnson for Street Fashion Sydney.
The exhibition presents exotic, sparsely peopled landscapes, traditional Middle Eastern cityscapes, Muslim architectural interior spaces and even a camelscape.. All in beautifully rendered, muted tones with the occasional colour splash or a deeper contrast. It's all exactly what you might hope to find as a traveller; but without the prerequisite photography skills, I suspect mere mortals might try to find and fail. Which makes this show a must visit for me. One of my favourite shots was the goat picture Ante is standing in front of above. Windswept, tranquil, beautiful, natural, everything just right. Ante does a great job of blending the varied elements of the Middle East, landscape, towns, structures, history into a glorious journey of photography and light. Myself, my mate Rod, and it seems everyone else enjoyed the show too. On until the 7th of June - VANDAL 16-30 Vine St. Redfern, Sydney.

HeadOn Photo Festival 2019 Up & Running

It's OFFICIAL - HeadOn Photo Festival is off and running with the big launch tonight at UNSW Art & Design (COFA). Felt a bit like I was back in the B&W darkroom; which I actually miss quite frankly. Now was that a special nofd to analogue photography? Here's my candid portrait of some young people in (and) the crowd with my (on loan) Fujifilm Australia X100F. Looking forward to the shows over the weekend it's going to be busy!

FOXFIRES (KITSUNE-BI)

I kicked of HeadOn with a pre launch show by photographer: Luke Hardy at Stanley Street Gallery. It's a little bit Red Riding Hood meets Japan, or perhaps its more the the other way around. Beautiful wor and on until the 11th of May. There was a dramatic performance piece during the launch, Luke was working the follow spot, and there was Japanese flute and Korean drum accompaniment.

Doctor Molotov as Bowie at Darryn Lyons Gallery

Last night saw the launch of a new David Bowie exhibition at the relatively new Lyons Gallery situated in the heart of the Paddington Fiveways. An impressive collection of editioned images are on display from a variety of photographers, some as famous in their own right as the subject himself.  Curator, Sandra Schnellhaus-Stephen has done a wonderful job of selecting and displaying the work in an immersive gallery environment. If you love the era of classic sixties and seventies celebrity photography, and on into the nineties, this gallery is a must for your list.

Pinky Blue - Art Student Style at Art House

Of course I find it irresistible to photograph someone who coordinates so well with a work of art - even if it means I end up with a personal conflict of interest if I photograph the artist too! And I am please to say I did indeed manage a portrait of the artist who's artwork you see here, James Ettelson at the opening of his show Everything Is at Art House gallery in Sydney. It's showing now and it's beautiful. How will I resolve this conflict? Easy - by asking you to check out Andrew's portrait over on my Street Fashion Sydney Facebook page, along with some other shots from the show; and.. while there don't for get to subscribe to my page! It's an easy way to keep up to date.

Joanna Frank - Magnitude of Dissonance at Goodspace Sydney

I'm getting to like Goodspace in Chippendale more and more. Sure it's a little rough but that is certainly part of it's charm; and that allows the work on the walls a kind of authenticity.. truth.. that you don't get in your perfect pure white cube. Anyway, it's interesting to see the current growth of text as art, in this show - something we were warned NEVER to do when I was at art school - but then Joanna Frank is a well seasoned creative with plenty of design, art and music projects under her belt and can pick and choose subjects of her own desire. I asked Joanna if PUNK was back; creating a magnitude of dissonance all my own - I can see it's much more than that! Love those slogans, the gold, the black and the paintings with a positive/negative geometry and of course, cultural iconography too. It was one night only, last night; however you can track down her work on IG and her Frank website here.
