Opening - THE PUBLIC BODY .03

THE PUBLIC BODY .03 which opened last night at Artspace in Sydney.  Apparently Elon Musk believes we are all living in a simulation, the 'Matrix', if that's so perhaps the solution to the future already lies in the past...

Art Seen August 2018 - Abstraction and More..

Art seen on the art scene, and the fashion too. Sometimes I think some people feel Street Fashion Sydney is not very serious about art but I can assure you I'm very serious about art indeed. And I hope you love what you see here and are inspired to visit the galleries and see the shows, and even buy some art! There has been some great work on show this month, this is of course the tip of the iceberg and I didn't take my camera out of its bag as often as I probably should have. So here we go, let's kick off with Claudia Chan Shaw at Art Atrium - it's photography, very beautiful and nostalgic still life's of collectables that are very much a part of Claudia life. Obscuriosity 8 - 25 August 2018

At the .M Contemporary 5 Years Anniversary Party

I read somewhere on the internet that it's Abstract Month in Sydney! Is it really, I don't know but there seems to be plenty of Reductionist/Non Objective/Abstract work on show right now.  There is also a Five Years Anniversary show on at .M Contemporary in Woollahra - a terrific show by Paul Snell at Gallery 9 and COMA have done the right thing by having a group show of local Reductionist artists  too! Fabulous abstractions, yes abstractions and with a 80s throwback feel at Piermarq by Gene A'Hern - that's two cool art student guys standing in front of one of them! I also want to give a nod to my friend Geoffrey Goodes who had an excellent mini retrospective of his work in a show titled My Wastrel Life at M2 Gallery; well I think many of us in the arts (and not just us!!!) sometimes wonder what we have done with our lives.. but it looked to me like Geoffrey has been anything but wasting his time. You can check out his Instagram here.

Last but not least - thank you to Charles and Christa Billich for having my partner and I along to their Welcome Home party at Billich Gallery - no one does an art party quite like the Billich's. I also heard a rumour while there that there will be a show of new works from their time away in Europe so keep your eyes open for that one. FOMO - Follow on Facebook!

Fishnets, a Glen Plaid Jacket & Off White Belt

Warming up the end of winter with a Glen Plaid double breasted jacket & Off White belt along with fishnet stockings and knee high boots. Sometimes someones sense of fashion is so arresting you can't but help stopping them in their tracks to ask for a picture. Personally I can never make up my mind; is Virgil Abloh's Off White label destroying fashion or setting the ground work for a bright new future? Apparently that belt was a brand new acquisition and I for one love the contrast it makes to this outfit! Spotted on the way to Holey Moley, Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Spice Theory Turramurra - Experience the Flavours of Southern India

Last week Vivienne and I were very pleased to accept an invitation to try out the brand-new, Spice Theory Indian Restaurant in Turramurra on Sydney's Upper North Shore. Well we were certainly in for a special treat. Only opened 10 days before; there was a young family already there enjoying a meal as we arrived at 6.30 sharp, and a group of eight arrived not long after us; it seems the word is already getting out about this beautiful new restaurant.

We were met by restaurateur Kailash who has been in the Indian food dining business for 30 years. Learning he was born in Mangalore and that Spice Theory is his new project to bring the flavours of Southern India to the hungry people of the North Shore. So of course we leave tonights menu completely in his hands, though not before mentioning that both Vivienne and I 'love spice, we love the heat'.

Shortly after being seated we are served with a basket of crisp pappadams and fresh mint and cucumber sauce; something to keep our hands and taste buds busy as we take in the restaurant decor, which is clean and modern with classic crisp white tablecloths. It's not long before out first entree arrives, the Mini Keema Dosa, beautifully spiced lamb in a crisp light Indian crepe accompanied by lentel broth in a tiny copper pot and fresh coconut chutney. This starter sets our mouths watering and our expectations for the rest of the meal on high alert!

The next arrivals are a classic Chicken Tikka with green leaf on the side, very generous portion size, flavourful and succulent, we devour all on the plate. Then Dahi Poori Chaart looking show stoppingly good and tastes great too - it's my first experience of this dish - the lightness of the  Gol Gappa Puris (shells), they make their own of course, the creamy fillings mixed with potato, chick pea, the crispness of the fine Sev (noodle); it's a wonderful explosion of taste and textures in the mouth.

By this time we are thinking, wow, three entrees, that's a meal right there; and then, along come our mains. Butter Chicken and Beef Vindallo served with light fluffy, perfect rice and a basket of Garlic Naan breads - how did they know! I want to take a slight detour here to mention my deep regret of having avoided Vindallo for half my life for fear of the heat; and now knowing what I was missing out on.. My recommendation, don't be afraid of the spice! Give it a go at least once in your life. And.. Spice Theory might be the best place for novice Vindalloers (yes I made that term up) to give this dish a go. Rich in flavour with a salty note that was new to me, this Vindallo was a taste treat but not with the heat I have come to expect. On mentioning this to Kailash at the end of the meal, he assured me that they had the heat in the kitchen one only had to ask. So if you want your Vindallo hot - make sure to mention it when ordering.

All our dishes were of the finest quality, with well balanced spice and aromatics, this included the Butter Chicken. More of that delicious marinated and tandoori cooked chicken in a subtle and creamy sauce. If this is your go-too Indian dish you will not be disappointed.

When presenting a portfolio of your work, you want a strong start and a strong finish with nothing 'less' in between, and our desert of Rose Panna Cotta fulfilled the promise of the whole meal. The rose was aromatic, distinct - without becoming cloying, exotic - perfect! We were so full we had opted to share, that may have been been a mistake; a delightful dish and yes, the perfect end to our meal.

From our spicy lamb Mini Keema Dosa, which was the dish with the hottest spices we experienced on the night, through tasty sides, moist chicken and beef dishes, generous servings; and well balanced flavours of Southern India, great service, and friendly atmosphere. A quality addition to eating out on the Upper North Shore - Spice Theory at Turramurra from my experience comes highly recommended. And of course if you want more heat - just ask! www.spicetheory.com.au/

July Winter - Fashionable Art & Street Fashion Roundup

So much art, so much fashion and so little time to select, edit and present the pictures in a way that does justice to all those involved.. Oh what a torrid story. Actually I have become obsessed with a new camera technique and it's taken over most of my brains editing space! But not completely. Winter has had some great shows and these pictures are from my most recent art excursions. Absolutely loved Caroline Gibbes  first exhibition, Turning Heads at ArtHouse Gallery. Fashion wit and lovable ceramics all done with impeccable style (just like Caroline herself). How wonderful it would be to see, fashion vision of creativity more closely embraced in Australia - where I think it's often considered a dirty world! There are more shows and text following, so do scroll down - and horizontal pictures are now clickable to view larger - so enjoy, what a great art winter its been.

Yes it's been cold - So apparently an off the shoulder jacket is the new thing - quite sensible in Sydney too, where there is never anywhere to hang your coat anyway! Seen at King on William and China Heights.

If it's Friday it must be China Heights - I'm surprised my first blog post from China Heights was not until May 2010 (SFS launched late 2008); simply because hanging out at shows at CH and taking photos there was certainly part of the impetus for creating Street Fashion Sydney. And as I have said to many people many times - Street Fashion Sydney was started to show people that creative things DO Happen in Sydney, you just need to show up and join in. Last Friday night at CH was certainly no exception, great art on show from Brooklyn Whelan and Steve Tierney, and plenty of style on show too. My hat goes off to the Directors of China Heights Gallery and the amazing way they have steered the space and continue to show innovative art that's not the mainstream commercial gallery scene.
