Flares Rule at China Heights Gallery

And so too does the group show of works on paper which of course was why I was there. I did however manage just this shot of (off duty model) Alys in her fabulous black flares which have ruched themselves into something of a Flamenco look, and there's nothing wrong with that! There was also a lovely red haired young woman wearing a lime green(ish) pair of flares and top as well, the flare was split and remained east-west flared! Unfortunately my social speed was not up to the task to manage pictures of both pants suits; maybe next time; till then its time to dig out some flares of your own.

Rappers + Streetwear Labels Finesse UK & Solemates Apparel @ NYFW

Things that struck me the most with Bracé fashion parades at New York Fashion Week. You hear a lot of talk about using models of different body sizes and shapes and of different races.. but you don't often see it. With the Bracé shows you certainly did. And something else I was not expecting was performances between runway shows; giving the night a bit of a cabaret feel along with the fashion runway experience. I liked that. It kept us all entertained as the next designer readied themselves for their show; along with some of the models who were walking for more than one designer, as you do, change their look - so some entertainment during the break is certainly a good idea. I start out with shots of singer/rapper Xavier who performed before the Finesse UK runway show, then rapper Elijah XIII who entertained us before the Solemates streetwear showcase. So here's the shots, and there are more streetwear designers and performers to come so don't forget to follow Street Fashion Sydney on Facebook Twitter or Instagram.

Flashback - The First Australian Blogger/Retail Collaboration Back In 2009

This blog post came up as a Facebook memory this morning and it really is a great flashback from the early days of fashion blogging. The very first Australian blogger shop window - back then Matt Jordan had his wildly popular Imelda Matt shoe blog and was certainly a major social media star. Fantastic of course. It was early days and no-one really knew where it could or would go, especially marketing departments; and budgets for working with bloggers were essentially non-existent! Commercial blogging was not yet a reality and as a result Matt shuttered the Imelda blog sometime (not too long) later. For Australia's very first Blogger/Retail collaboration I photographed Matt at my photography studio and then did the digital post work, swapping Matt's for Imelda's face in the mirror. I had previously done the portrait of Matt with the shoes around his neck that he ran with as his media portrait for years and years; along with the group photo with the Tan sisters. Fun days; way way before Instagram came along and changed the face of blogging forever. It's been a wild ride - and it's great to still be here. Text below is from the original post November 2009. I think my writing skills have improved somewhat; and of course I'm still available for all kinds of Blogger collaborations, just contact me!

The first Australian Blogger / Retail Window Collaboration 2009.

Its nice to see blogging, portraiture and retail all getting on so well together. In this case I was able to collaborate with Imelda shoe blogger Imelda Matt once again on a portrait project; this time for a window display in Brisbane's luxury emporium Jean Brown. The shot was done in one fairly quick afternoon session in the studio.

A big thanks to Matt and everyone at Jean Brown who worked so hard to make this wonderful project possible.

Thanks 2009!

André Bryson - Guerrilla - Emerging Fashion Designers at NYFW

For those of you who may not be familiar with the term, Guerrilla is the name given to irregular military combatants, like a 'Resistance' army; not an official army... In my correspondence with the designer André Bryson he tells me that these 60's 70's silhouettes are a reference inspired by the tensions of the day, both in the USA; and tensions in the UK epitomised by the Mods and Rockers. Clearly André sides with the Mods on the style front. And quoting Bryson directly "Only the five primary colors (black, white, red, yellow and blue) I wanted to express that every color known to man is derived from these five colors in hope to bring unity to this collection as a complete story." I suspect the colours chosen also represent a message of unity in more than just the designs. My photos are of some of the highlights from the Guerrilla range, shown with Bracé Designers Emergent De la Mode NYFW at The Stewart Hotel, NYC September 2017.

I love the blocked colours and bold stripes, patch pockets and windowpane broken-checks, black with white or white with black, playing with positive/negative combinations. The innovative Nehru jacket as an open-front blouse with a scarf or pussy bow tied at the collar, a personal favourite of mine. Curiously, weeks later I saw similar concepts being sent down the runway in my news feeds from the Paris shows.. Weeks later.. Bryson seems to have the zeitgeist a fashion designer needs on his side. Love his designs? You can contact him directly via his instagram below. For more shots, just scroll down!

Joanna Frank - Magnitude of Dissonance at Goodspace Sydney

I'm getting to like Goodspace in Chippendale more and more. Sure it's a little rough but that is certainly part of it's charm; and that allows the work on the walls a kind of authenticity.. truth.. that you don't get in your perfect pure white cube. Anyway, it's interesting to see the current growth of text as art, in this show - something we were warned NEVER to do when I was at art school - but then Joanna Frank is a well seasoned creative with plenty of design, art and music projects under her belt and can pick and choose subjects of her own desire. I asked Joanna if PUNK was back; creating a magnitude of dissonance all my own - I can see it's much more than that! Love those slogans, the gold, the black and the paintings with a positive/negative geometry and of course, cultural iconography too. It was one night only, last night; however you can track down her work on IG and her Frank website here.
