tenmoregirls - glory box - the art of the wearable object.

It's a curious thing this business of wearable art - objects of art that function - the decorative blending with the practical (or maybe not so practical) and the world of high art. And if it was not for having a few friends who were well versed in the three dimensional arts at the very beginning of my art career I think my uneasiness; my fear (!) of understanding the three dimensional art object would probably still be quite strong. I had again, the similar good fortune at a later point in time - a time when two dimensional quality; or is that the one dimensional quality of 'surface' ruled my own world absolutely, to have met someone who believed very much in the world and the art of craft; to again enable me to see beauty in creativity that I had sometimes previously been unable to acknowledge..

This is a beautiful show of art, craft and design with widely varied interpretations on the 'glory box' theme. Although I loved Radka Passianova's '...a dream of fear....,' Daggers in Silver Steel and Ebony; finding those at the bottom of  a glory box is both a beautiful and frighting proposition! there are all manner of imagined glory box pieces and many of them are certainly luxurious and affordable art.

The pictures start with five of the artists portraits, some of the work and then some equally styling attendees. 'glory box' August 27 - September 8th; Salerno Gallery, 70 Glebe Point Road, Glebe. Web links at the bottom of the page.

And I have my own piece of  'wearable' Luxury now too thanks to Fujifilm Australia who are very kindly sponsoring Street Fashion Sydney with thier fabulous X-Pro 1 camera and lenses. The 'glory box' opening is my first SFS post using the new camera which a lot of people seemed to notice is quite artfully stylish itself! Thank you Fujifilm Australia.

Critical Cultural Mass - 2012 Sydney Tattoo & Body Art Expo

Is it Rock 'N' Roll? Bikes and Bikers? Retro Trippies; all 50's inspired? Or is it now anyone who ever wanted to do something, something just a little different... It's all the above and a hell of a lot more too! And it was certainly not Street Fashion Sydney's intent to cover back-to-back Tattoo stories but hey; when a subculture reaches the kind of critical mass that Tattoo seems to have finally achived; then its really more surprising that there are not more tattoo stories on SFS.

The Tattoo and tattooing is getting plenty of coverage, as was plenty of skin in a plethora of Tattoo styles at the  2012 Sydney Tattoo & Body Art Expo. I was more than a little taken aback by the number of exhibitors, the quality, the quantity and just how bloody stylish (though sometimes a little too studied), at  just how big the whole Tattoo thing has become. So it would seem to me that the time has come to lay to rest that age old criticism of tattoos... with this many people, with this much Tattooing going on and coming so so close to becoming main-stream-culture - the days of regretting that Tat are over baby!

For those of you out at Timbuktu or Back-of-Bourke; or some palce where you have not noticed the growing Brigade of tattoo wearing peoples; Sandra and I have produced a series of portraits and 'needle-point' pictures to help you get in touch with world of Tattooing as it is today..

Icon Brand - Hunky Dory - Pieces of Nowhere - Social Club !~)

Hip, Happening, with some restrained hipsterism meets surf culture (?) and inner city cool. Sure that's an unlikely culture-combo but the Icon boys seem to know how to make it happen. Or to put it another way, the Pieces of Nowhere, Icon Brand HS11 launch went off. As it did last time only this time more so! Yes its been a while since I went out and enjoyed myself quite like this.

So part in homage to the previous post 'its a mans world' I started this post with a series of portraits from the night, some of the people you may recognise, yes I'm sure you will. AND I am having a little Icon Brand giveaway-see the bottom of the page...

If you see someone in the portrait shots you know, please get them to drop me a line; I think these shots may have a future well beyond this brief blog post. And- well, you-know; its nice to have a name on the picture if you get it hung in a major exhibition.. Well it would not be the first time!

Thanks to all the guys from Icon Brand, I don't know how you do it but do it you do! And thanks to the bands and DJs and the friendly barmen with the Sol beer and, well I din't try the Rekorderlig Cider but it looked very popular. and thanks guys for the goodie bag; mine contained not one but two little camera on chains! I cannot possibly wear two so I am giving one of the little cameras on a chain away, perfect for photographers; see T&C below.
