Kobe Kai - Men's Fashion - Raffles Graduate Fashion Design Show.

Last Wednesday night I was treated to viewing the Graduate Fashion Design show from the students at Raffles College. It was a pretty full on event with some very nice collections and I will be dedicating a large post to showing some of my favourite designs from the night very soon. So please follow me here with your favourite Blog reader or over on Facebook to make sure you see the posts as they happen. Apart from the show I managed to track down a few of the designers for a Street Fashion portrait on the night - think of these shots as an extension of my 'Artists at their Openings' series; I am kicking off with my portrait of Kobe Kai who showed a 'retro' 50's inspired range with colourfully patterned front shirt panels and some combat fatigue camo wear too. Ticked a few of my boxes right there! First of the series...

Street Style - Photographing the Newtown Festival with the Fuji X-Pro1

The most important thing about today is that it was Armistice Day, 11 11 11 the day the shooting stopped in one of the worlds greatest conflicts; and if only all conflict had stopped on that day, well the world might be as wonderful and fabulous as the day was today at the Newtown Festival. Conflict still continues, I wish it didn't but the world is a complex place. And to all those who have paid the ultimate price, I; we, those who enjoy the freedoms you have allowed us; thank you.

So today was also the Newtown Festival, I have not been in years and years; my friend Nyk thought it might be a good work out for me and the X-Pro1 and he was right - here are the results of a very enjoyable afternoon photographing the style, the fashion, the people that made the Newtown Festival the great success it surely was, You! These shots were all made with the Fujifilm X-Pro1 with the XF18mmF2 R lens and the tiny dedicated EF-X20 flash unit - as I knew the light would be tricky and I wanted to try a bit of a 'Martin Parr' Magnum on camera  fill-flash approach to the shots. More photography details after the pictures for those so inclined..

I knew the harsh Australian 'Summer' light would make it very difficult to create a consistent set of images at the Newtown Festival. I decided to see if I could use the X-Pro1's EF-X20 TTL flash to get a series of  shots for a Street Fashion Sydney post. This is the first time I have tried shooting in this style so I tested flash and camera settings at home in my backyard before heading out. I settled on shooting with these settings - Camera at 125th - the fastest flash sync speed, lens set to Shutter priority, A setting on the lens. ISO at 200 and .. Exposure compensation at -1 EV (but I jiggled it to -1 1/3 & -2/3 depending on the light). The flash I also ran mostly at the minus 2/3rds setting. So Minus on camera & Minus on flash. Most of the shots here ended up at with an F# between 11 & 16 due to the brightness of the light with 16 the highest F# on the lens. I set the focus point to the left of centre and kept it there all day, great for vertical portraits and if the shot was not; I did a 'half press' and re-composed which was quick and worked. I shot just over 200 frames; went through six so-so quality AAA batteries in the flash; and the results are above. All the pictures above were quickly adjusted from the camera JPEGs in this software. You can read my review of the X-Pro1 here.

If I took your picture and you don't see it here; drop me a line, let me know what you were wearing and I will email you a copy of your shot.  200+ pictures down to 26 was a big call, there were many lovely pictures I loved but passed on. Hope you enjoy the Newtown Festival shots as much as I enjoyed making them.

Lennox St Studios Art Fair Newtown.. 2012

I used to live just around the corner from these artists studios housed in the 1920's Saint Josephs boys school building, and while I have been aware of the Annual art fair; well until last night I had never been in the building. There are Painters, Sculptors, Print Makers. Work and works in many styles and prices.. And while the opening last night was a highly enjoyable affair somewhat fueled by the rather tasty Fox Creek Wines, I favoured the Red Barron Shirazzzz!
Moving through the artists studios and seeing the different personal work spaces and the art and the materials used to make the art; it took me right back to my first 'studio show' just before I started at the QCA in Brisbane, we won't say when. I was also reminded of the highly tactile nature of making art - is completely hands on - and was reminded yet again, that this tactile nature of making your art is something that has been pretty much removed from the photographic process. It's not just a sentimental feeling, it's having a big impact on the way people/photographers make photos now, I'm not saying its good or bad but it is very different.

Enough with the reminiscing though; the show; the art fair continues all weekend at the Lennox St Studios, 111 Lennox St Newtown Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 November, 10am – 5pm.

See my artists portraits made over the weekend here.

The Colours of. Fringe Arts at The Forum..

Are people always dressing in such colour coordinated ways or am I just developing a heightened awareness because, Colour + Personal Style = Street Fashion Picture? I suppose it is appropriate that I was to experience both art and powerful colour blocking fashion combinations at The 'Italian' Forum in Leichhardt. And while I knew there were apartments and shops and restaurants in there; I had no idea there was a theatre complex and the local library as well - all tucked away inside. The exhibition spread throughout the foyer areas of this performance space consists of a small but dedicated selection of artists working across a number of different disciplines including painting photography and installation works. If you are in the area and in particular if you have never been there, slip on in and check it out; I think The Forum will welcome as many people heading into their Piazza and shopping precinct as they can.

Miss Earth Australia - Behind The Scenes 2012

What's it like to be part of the Miss Earth Australia pageant? This year my name was put forward to be part of the judging panel by my friend and Dear Pageant Girl founder Peter Sereno. Unlike Miss Universe's 'half days' where I first met Peter; Miss Earth has one full day of judging then the Final the following evening. All the contestants have already been working on their green credentials and also attended tree plantings in the immediate run-up to the main event.

Its a long day starting at the East Ocean Restaurant in the Haymarket. The now 19 contestants begin by introducing themselves to the panel one by one. Next comes a quick change and the behind closed doors 'Best in Swimwear'. Miss Earth Australia has chosen to move the focus away from swimwear (there is no swimwear parade in the final), however there is swimwear at the International level so we judge the girls in their cossies to make sure they are ready for the Overseas competition. After a quick bikini walk around the room the girls get back into their street clothes for a run-through on the Miss Earth questions; yes there are some nerves on show but all contestants do very well; these girls really know their environmental stuff!

Next is the 'Best in Environment' speech, a one to two minute timed piece; just you in front of a panel of judges who just so happen to be seated in front of a half dozen or so photographers & video operators busily snaping and recording the whole process, everything that's going on. Not to mention some of the judges myself included taking their own pictures too HELLO!  But too many pictures are never enough, before we can break for lunch its time for formal group shots with the organizers, sponsors and of course the judges. At last we all sit down for a lunch time feast at the East Ocean Restaurant, one of the pageant's sponsors and the food is great.

It's then time for a change of venue, a quick trip a few block closer to the CBD to the Hard Candy fitness club's studios for the 'Best in talent'.  This is a non compulsory stage but I have to say, find something to do! Read a poem, play an instrument, juggle, sing; it really is in your best interest to try something..

The Final Miss Earth Australia 2012

Venue, North Sydney Leagues Club.
Saturday is another long day for the contestants, starting preparations at 12, full rehearsals for the evening show beginning at 2PM. Dresses need to checked and made ready, hair and make-up done. The judges begin arriving around 5 in the afternoon for the scheduled 7 PM start time and the judging panel grows in number with four new additions for the final.

A little after seven the proceedings begin, first a speech from Miss Earth Australia founder Maria James; then an opening dance number from all the contestants in sparkling sequinned dresses, I didn't know they could all do that! A song from our MC, introductions, the former Miss Earth (but who will win tonight). There is the best of the talent intermingled with changes of dresses, more walk bys, the gowns, the judging, 19 down to 10, Jenna dances, 10 down to 4!

After what I am sure must seem an eternity for the remaining four contestants...
Starting with runner-up
Miss Earth Australia Fire 2012 - Michelle Rimmer,
Miss Earth Australia Water 2012 - Audrey Tan,
Two awards to go, one announcement and we will know it all.
