Victoria - By the Beach - Monterosso, Italy

White Caviar Life and I were only in Monterosso al Mare for a week, but Victoria who we met at the local supermarket became like a close friend, providing us with tips and letting us know if something was happening in town. The Esoteric & Erotic Art of Del Kathryn Barton.

The only previous time I have seen so many people crushing into the Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery was on the occasion of Bill Henson's first exhibition after the scandal of the 2008 vice squad shut-down show. His 2010 show was completely chockas-as with people there to support Bill, including myself; but really in a completely different way to the crush of people that were there to see the new Del Kathryn Barton (DKB) show 'angel dribble'.  What I find so fascinating about a DKB show is that it's feminine, heterosexual semi-surrealist post/Secessionist Klimt meets Schiele erotica; with a little H. R. Giger thrown in for good measure, and no one seems to notice... the erotica. Maybe it's the Kali-like abundance of eyes and breasts (in lieu of arms).. that bedazzles one and all compelling us to ignore the elephant in the room, the esoteric erotica. Well no-one seems to mention it much! They just love the pictures. But it is Del's "universe" and she has captured the zeitgeist of youth (real youth followers too), the coming of age and sexual curiosity; which, is a theme in much of Henson's work as well. Of course DKB also reverses through time and the erotic back to the absolute innocence and wonder of childhood which, while walking the tightrope of sentimentality and kitsch, never seems to slip into either. It is I believe an utterly unique creative position; though in this show DKB refuses to rest on her laurels and success. There is much new in this new show and when DKB says she "bled" for this show, I for one believe her.

About Art Last Night - Paint and Design..

Well the last two nights actually and it was paint, photography and design - fashion, ceramics, jewellery, craft - and the environment and I couldn't find the room sheet for what is a pretty special art/design show at KUDOS gallery, so a little light on some details, at least for the moment. The very first picture below is of artist Patrick Cremin. I saw some of this show, the photographs in January at First Draft the photos are fine but I loved this, 'Defence Mechanisms' the complete show with it's broken bottle in concrete, top of brick wall sculptures, the graffiti inspired urban cammoflage, you better be quick only today and the tomorrow the 8th!

 KUDOS Gallery was/is as mentioned above showing 'Designed By', fabulous show! And perhaps I should take this opportunity to point out to UNSW Art & Design faculty; that one of us is inept at supplying relevant information about the galleries and the exhibitions on their website! The exhibitors Facebook pages that are I assume meant to plug the gap are not always as useful as one might hope Q.E.D. this show below!

Street Fashion Sydney @ INTERMISSION by Pete Hawk.

Its not often that I go to a show expecting one thing (that I suspect I won't like) and end up being completely moved by the work in a way I would never thought possible. Pete Hawk's brief exhibition at M2 gallery in Surry Hills is one such show, it's on till the first of September, which I think means you can drop in Monday/Tuesday and see it. Link to the images and my portrait of Pete at the end of the post if you want a taster. Moving and mildly disturbing pictures of isolated men in country NSW.. without being sentimental; well that was my take. But enough of that, you can make up your own mind, here's what I saw people wearing while I was there. Enjoy!

Is it Art? Or is it an Art Handbag Abstraction?

Friday night I popped into Sarah Cottier Gallery in Paddington for the current double header show, John Spiteri in gallery 1 and Huseyin Sami showing in gallery 2. As much as I enjoyed the abstract canvases in gallery 1; it was the thick and colourful slumped-vinyl-paint 'canvases' of Huseyin's works that really caught my eye. Why? Well initially I liked the idea that there were these handbag-like artworks on the wall in rather nice colour schemes (or colorways as they now say in the design/fashion trade (I have so have never liked that term))... And, after I had been introduced to Husyin I asked him if he would mind if I referred to the works as 'Art Handbags', he sort of laughed and smiled. Thank you Husyin for humouring me and thank you for your show 'The art of ending a conversation'. Well I wonder what that's about!  Anyway, I loved the show and our man was charming and there's my portrait below too; it's on now until the 2nd of August.

I don't think I have ever posted a solo 'reverse' view of an outfit before but I could not resist with this shot, this outfit; seen at Black Eye gallery on Thursday night. A perfect Spring ensemble of midnight blue shorts, in a 'dress' running short style! Light linen jacket, essential large bag for your goodies and some stylish matching heels. Of course people just don't look at what you are wearing from in front, the details can also be seen from behind.. And a rather wonderful portrait show, PASSION AND PASSION  - A transparent view of Man by photographer ANDREAS SMETANA; clever without being cliché. Mark Bailey - Pattern at Chrissie Cotter Gallery.

I happened across Mark Bailey's charming show 'Pattern' this afternoon. I was out looking for boots which I found and since I was virtually going right past, decided to see what show was up at Marrickville's Chrissie Cotter gallery. Its the first time I have seen Mark's work and as the title of the show suggests there is a lot of pattern and variation on themes. Mark was kind enough to let me grab this portrait of him with the installation artwork 'The  moon and my son'.  The show is not up for long so if you want to see it you will need to get down there from Wednesday or next weekend. you can find pictures of the works in the show on Mark's website here, http://www.markbailey.com.au/. I was particularly taken with the coloured square pattern on small wooden squares series and the maple tree series as well. On until Sunday the 21st of July.. And yes they are cardboard telescopes jutting into the portrait of Mark, telescopes and phases of the moon, beautiful!

Photographer's Style - Redfern Street Redfern

On Saturday afternoon I attended the opening of the Jill Crossley 'Beyond Looking' exhibition. Its a beautiful show of black and white photographs of 'abstracts from nature' at the Arthere gallery- quite mysterious and beautiful. The show was opened by Robert McFarlane who has know Jill for very many years and provided some insight into her working life as a photographer and; some tips on viewing her work. Do visit this show!

After the show I coffee with my friends the photographers Sandra R and Lynn Smith; Lynn showed recently at Arthere.. and though I have known Lynn 'online' for years, it was lovely to finally meet him in person. And as a bit of a celebration of the meeting and at Lynn's prompting; here is a commemorative portrait of my two friends Sandra and Lynn looking very much like two photographers, holding up a wall in Redfern. Love you guys.

Same - Artists and their Posse at 55 Sydenham Rd

'Same' a group showing by - Jack Jeweller / Robert Milne / Marian Tubbs / Eleanor Weber - and some of best video art I have seen in a long time. The Director of the gallery told me the artists were anonymous but the artists told me they were not.. I never got to the bottom of that one so I decided to do an anonymous portrait anyway with everyone facing away from the camera, and just to be safe, a front one too. I've joined them together as you can see below, having an each way bet on whether the art crew are anonymous or not..

And there was a stylish 'art posse' in attendance too who were kind enough to let me make a little series of Street Fashion Portraits; thank you everyone for your kindness and patience.

Get down to the gallery; check out the video install - it was VERY fashion oriented which was kind of nice; maybe thats why I liked it so much, and so much better than your usual 'Fashion Video', fashion-directors take note!
