Costume & Millinery Graduate Exhibition 2018

Wow time really does fly by; was it really a year ago I attended the Fashion half of this Fashion and Costume Design showcase! Last night as you have already realised I attended the costume (and millinery) parade, a VIP event with canapes, sparkling wine, other guests and well wishers. I love costume design - I think it's in the family as my mum always made my dad's costumes for the stage shows he did for many years up in Brisbane. And fashion is really costume anyway! Quite a few of the designs were very much historically based fashion items so Q.E.D. - the one often does equal the other. The concept was to research a theatre character and then remake their costume; not all were historical bodice-rippers though; and I unfortunately missed grabbing a shot of the Mad Maxine/Feral Cheryl outfit. Loved the Picnic at Hanging Rock recreations (still love my own editorial photoshoot based on the same film) And without planing it at all, I did manage to come up with a series of portraits of the costume design students, with their pieces, on their models. So here we go, lots to see, beautiful work, hopefully all correctly attributed. Best of luck for your future - or should I say ' break a leg!' and thank you one and all for a wonderful evening.

FEEL AND THINK : Fashion Runway Show & Tear-a-Way at SCAF.

FEEL AND THINK : Fashion Runway Show & Tear-a-Way; Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF) in partnership with UTS Fashion Design Department
.

This was the final instalment in the FEEL AND THINK: A NEW ERA OF TOKYO FASHION brought to you by the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF). You can read all about it over on my good friends design site Design Federation - love you Klaus & Co. I arrived just in time to see the last of the runway action in the Sherman, SCAF gallery space. Must say this was a fabulous installation piece and at the end of the runway show which was in fact a walk-around on the gallery floor not an elevated runway scenario.. at the end of which parts of the ribbed paper construction were torn open to reveal select fashion pieces hanging in the white, womb-like spaces. You will get the idea from the first shot in the series below. Congratulations to the 'emerging?' designers for some very clever and striking design work.

Somewhat strangely even though this is a SCAF event in partnership with UTS Fashion Design Department, I have still had quite a difficult time finding any-sort-of-relevant-information about the designers featured at this event. It certainly makes me feel for the marketing people as it seems obvious-to-me that their job is absolutely impossible to do! No doubt no-one can send through their CV - Design Concept Outline - it's just you with the PR job and your ass in the breeze! So I have culled what information I could from the SCAF Facebook page; please let me know any mistakes! Mouse over images for hopefully correct designer information where I could find some.. My thoughts on what (emerging) fashion parades need can be read here..

Kobe Kai - Men's Fashion - Raffles Graduate Fashion Design Show.

Last Wednesday night I was treated to viewing the Graduate Fashion Design show from the students at Raffles College. It was a pretty full on event with some very nice collections and I will be dedicating a large post to showing some of my favourite designs from the night very soon. So please follow me here with your favourite Blog reader or over on Facebook to make sure you see the posts as they happen. Apart from the show I managed to track down a few of the designers for a Street Fashion portrait on the night - think of these shots as an extension of my 'Artists at their Openings' series; I am kicking off with my portrait of Kobe Kai who showed a 'retro' 50's inspired range with colourfully patterned front shirt panels and some combat fatigue camo wear too. Ticked a few of my boxes right there! First of the series...

Launch My Label- *Flash* Kapow!

I was going to title this Blog, 'Why I am the worst best runway photographer in the Universe'  but then I decided that would be far to controversial a title and decided to go with the more pedestrian one above. Yes I have been coaxed yet again to attend a Fashion Show, this time Launch My Label by Chic Petite Events. "This is a quarterly event ,etc etc etc emerging artists, organisations and talented young people to effectively launch their label in the Australian market."

Well that is definitely a good thing & as my readers will know I am becoming quite familiar with the new phenomenon of Fashion as Entertainment! This time I found myself in the photographers 'pit' with a view to doing some real runway shots, well why not. The problem was that I was a bit lazy last night and while I did take my bigger camera I decided to leave my flash behind as I hate carrying too much stuff around. I thought well, I will just make-do.

Making-Do has its own special surprises though and last night it was that as the models made their way to the end of the (short) Runway the spotlights which were only on one side only really illuminated their bodies not their heads. Of course if you were just watching the show you probably would not even notice this but my camera certainly did and I very quickly had to decide if my next Blog would be about 'Headless models on the Catwalk, We only show the clothes'. Ah Catwalk, thats a phrase I far prefer to Runway!

No; headless models would never do, they would never forgive me. Everyone else with a camera was however using flash, they were firing off all around me from every conceivable direction. I thought "you know theres plenty of light going on here I just need to use it", and so I did setting my camera to long exposure and coming up with a kind of beautiful, 'Village of the Dammed' version of Launch My Label that I am sure will be far more entertaining to my readers than any normal runway pictures could ever be.

After the show we, (my photographer friend & I) headed backstage to meet the designers & models and congratulate everyone on a job well done. I was telling everyone "no I don't shoot runway I'm a photographer, but I do have a blog called Street Fashion Sydney". And we were all swapping cards and stories as you do! My cards which are quite big and look like this,

Photo business card, beauty shot of Adele, Kent Johnson Photography

and this,
Photo business card - Model in top hat on location, on location , Kent Johnson Photography
and this.

Seemed to go down quite well.

But it's not about us, it's about the designers who last night were,
Carmen Steane
ZarBe
Clover Love
Laura Maidment
Samantha Chan
Rebekah Anne Fashion
Thulie

Accessories,
Coco Liberace
Featherhead
Danyelle

As these are emerging designers I think the best way to find them will be to cut and paste their names into that search bar thingie at the top of your Facebook page. Everyone has a Facebook page & I suspect they do too. (Revised - images refreshed 2026)
