Vivid Sydney - Light Sculptures - Art Lights Up The Rocks, Part two
of my self set challenge to share the light sculptures of Vivid Sydney 2012 not only as I experienced them but also with a view to sharing the artists work as I interpreted it through my camera. It really has been quite a challenge to make a series of original pictures, using the camera to edit the scene with differentness lenses, exposures (time and light), angles and perspective - all in the hope that the feeling of each individual work comes through; a way of looking that presents the art work with the style pop and dash it very definitely had and the atmosphere created by this beautiful Vivid Sydney event.

I also took the time to photograph the 'light posts' that have the names of the Art Works and the Artists so I can provide the relevant details to credit the artworks you are viewing on the blog (though I missed a couple so any help much appreciated); because its not just about pretty lights and pictures its also about the people, the artists who had the inspiration to make the work for us all to enjoy.

I had a wonderful time during all three of my visits to Vivid Sydney and I have also enjoyed working on the pictures I made, selecting and editing them to bring out the best of my vision for the artists works.  While Vivid may have been conceived as a way to bring life into the city during cold dark (wet) of winter - and it has done that extremely well indeed; its not just a pretty light show, it really is a massive massive art exhibition. An exhibition that engages, excites, and encourages art interaction on a scale and at a level I have never seen before. Congratulations to all the artists and organizers involved for creating a truly stunning and exciting event.

Vivid Sydney - Art Lights Up The Rocks, Part 1

Well despite the cold and the wet Vivid Sydney, the festival of "Light Music Ideas" is well under way. Natasa and I had a very enjoyable time last night wandering from Argyle St in The Rocks through to Walsh Bay, Oohing and Ahhing the creative light and sculpture installations that make up the visual backbone of Vivid Sydney. As this was the first time in a long long time I had been out photographing this kind of event; and with Street Fashion Sydney on-its-knees in need of blogging material, I  joined the tripod toting tourist class; packed  a stack of camera equipment that has not seen use from for 'quite some time' to 'far more years' than I care to remember - all in the interest some 'Old Skool In-Camera' photo trickery and a story of how-fashionable-Sydney-can-be when it comes to lighting up the night. Magic was goin' to happen, neutral density filters and multiple exposure, long exposures and freakkky wide angle ZOOM stuff... And if there was any remaining doubt that in the age of digital photography, everyone is now a photographer; last night it was put completely to rest as most installations required the skill-and-cunning of a Fashion Runway Photographer (trying to get backstage) or Paparazzi trying to find some-space, to-make 'original' a shot from what everyone - yes I do mean everyone was photographing!

Anyway(s) my shots for 'Street Fashion Sydney' are below including the last shot which includes the moon in partial eclipse! Yes a great night out at what is truly becoming a major Sydney event and this has made me very happy indeed and quite proud to be a Sydneysider... Well until I went to the Vivid Sydney website today to try and find the names of the the artists and the titles of the artworks I had photographed last night. What did I find. Zip, Nothing Nadda!

Dear Vivid Sydney and Destination New South Wales; I have but one thing to say about this glaring omission. Support the artists that support you.

No Artists No Art - No Art - No Vivid Sydney!

Please please please, do not let this happen again. Yes, Vivid Sydney is supporting Artists with this great event, but the artists also support you. The artists also support Destination NSW who oversee the event as well as the hospitality and retail trades that gain the most financially from this event. In case you missed the point above let me say it again; No Artists No Art - No Art - No Vivid Sydney! Lets at the very least see a map with the names of the artists and titles of the artworks. Descriptions would be nice to but lets just get going with names and titles.

And as the big rainstorm blows up from Victoria (those guys will stop at nothing to try to ruin Sydney's fun and obsession with pretty colours and fireworks; even weather warfare!) I prepare to head out to a Vivid Sydney 'Ideas' forum. Strangely enough in contrast to the 'art' the speakers at the 'Ideas' events seem to be quite well documented. Words words words; It can be very tough for visual artists in a world of words...

SNO 82 - Marrickville's Best Art? You Decide..

SNO 82 must be one of the loveliest SNO shows I have seen in a while which is a pretty big call as I do love almost everything that SNO does show.  So yes you might say I am more than a little biased on the SNO front. The biggest thrill for me was Ian Andrews work 'Displacements', a contemporary constructivist piece a little like El Lissitzky meets Steve Jobs (and El Lissitzky wins)... Its computer and tiny light installations and books and posts... Much much more than the yellow post I photographed Ian behind. I have only experienced Ian's sound works before, Displacements is a wonderful introduction to this side of his work.  

Alexandra Lawson's terrarium project is a beautiful, changing, ongoing work which extends to an online website documenting its growth. Grace's 'foam' works show a beauty one would not normally associate with the material used and Tarn and Fiona's 'canvases' brought more than colour to the exhibition. SNO 82 is on until the 3rd of June.

Shoes on the train - Central to Sydenham

A funny thing happened to me on the way home last night...  I had just spent a happy few hours at the Monster Children No 34 magazine launch (more on that soon) and was looking through the shots on my little G10 when I noticed these two lovely girls sitting opposite me with their 'late night' shopping.
A little conversation was struck up.
Me "Have you got some new shoes in those bags"?
Girls "yes"
Me "Would you like to show them to me"?
Them "Yes"
Me "Can I take some shots for my little blog Street Fashion Sydney"?
The Girls, "OK"
So here they are, the new shoes from a little Thursday night shopping! I like both pairs; and as you can see from the bag the chunky cork with black leather are from Novo Shoes. I didn't catch the brand of the other pinkish pair but I suspect the owner might make a comment and let us know.

Critical Cultural Mass - 2012 Sydney Tattoo & Body Art Expo

Is it Rock 'N' Roll? Bikes and Bikers? Retro Trippies; all 50's inspired? Or is it now anyone who ever wanted to do something, something just a little different... It's all the above and a hell of a lot more too! And it was certainly not Street Fashion Sydney's intent to cover back-to-back Tattoo stories but hey; when a subculture reaches the kind of critical mass that Tattoo seems to have finally achived; then its really more surprising that there are not more tattoo stories on SFS.

The Tattoo and tattooing is getting plenty of coverage, as was plenty of skin in a plethora of Tattoo styles at the  2012 Sydney Tattoo & Body Art Expo. I was more than a little taken aback by the number of exhibitors, the quality, the quantity and just how bloody stylish (though sometimes a little too studied), at  just how big the whole Tattoo thing has become. So it would seem to me that the time has come to lay to rest that age old criticism of tattoos... with this many people, with this much Tattooing going on and coming so so close to becoming main-stream-culture - the days of regretting that Tat are over baby!

For those of you out at Timbuktu or Back-of-Bourke; or some palce where you have not noticed the growing Brigade of tattoo wearing peoples; Sandra and I have produced a series of portraits and 'needle-point' pictures to help you get in touch with world of Tattooing as it is today..
