SIGMA FP Launch & Blade Runner Style - OPT Circular Quay

On monday night I attended the Sigma FP camera launch at a beautiful-view-bar down at Circular Quay. From our third floor position, well it's a tough situation any time, will the view overpower your presentation? So hats off (well so windy earlier I didn't even wear one) to CR Kennedy and Digi Direct for a great Sigma event. Someone had been doing some thinking; we had a burlesque performer of great beauty and.. later in the evening she transformed into a snake charmer too. Or perhaps that's a charmer with a snake, too.. What with all the smoke from the bush fires and such a great city location, I felt transported to some sort of steam punk Blade Runner vision. Very enjoyable, I hope this picture translates the scene for you. And the very cinema oriented modular Sigma FP camera? Looks bloody marvelous. Head down to Digi Direct to check it out - there's a card and battery bonus on now.

King Imprint & Kandi Reign Sing & Dance LIVE at NYFW

Well it may be 2018 but I'm still not done with 2017 yet! Not when I still have super cool shots from all around the world and pictures of performances like this one from two young dance stars, King Imprint & Kandi Reign; performing live at BracĂ© New York Fashion Week. Unlike here in Australia, the independent Fashion shows like to keep you entertained between runway shows but putting on a show... As a NYFW nube this was a pleasant surprise to me and when it's two acts like these young YouTube entertainers coming together it's absolutely top shelf. While I'm pretty sure I captured the energy and excitement of the performance, sadly there is no sound. So if you want to see and hear them perform, just click through to their respective YouTube video channels below after the pictures. Thanks for a great show guys, Cheers; I LOVED IT! Special thanks to SFS's NYFW sponsor White Caviar Life for getting us there.

Art & Breast Awareness - KUDOS & M2 Galleries.

In the interest of avoiding upsetting anyone too much - one hopes, with our first post for 2017 - I will point out very early on that the awareness at the joint show at KUDOS was of a very different nature to the underground comix art type of breast awareness at the group show at M2 gallery. Space 1, KUDOS was (on NOW) Bec Litvan's BEAUTY AND THE BREAST; Painting, Photography, beautiful decorative Mastectomy Bras and a table of pearls as part of the installation. Bec told me the work was born out of the change she saw in her mothers personality after the breast cancer operation, the works are intended to bring back the beauty and a sense of the joys of life, and her mum modelled for the photographs in the show. Beautiful work. Scroll down to continue reading.

COLLUSIVE MISCELLANY by Amy Claire Mills, Bailee Lobb is not about breasts however it is a work performed in the nude so-to-speak, while interacting with the large wind blown fabrics which have themselves been manipulated through tying & heat - even the fans blowing did nothing to diminish the heat of this performance of which there are to be three more iterations; Live performances in space 2 : Saturdays 14, 21 & 28 January, 1-2pm. Check it out!

Was it a strange coincidence to be at M2 the very next night? GORO a group show of five artists who, as mentioned above are very much in the style of the underground Comix of the 70's & 80's; think Charles Burns, Robert Crumb & H R Giger but with an Aussie-Goth/Surf Culture tie in.. And the breasts? Well of course, Dominatrix style and plenty of them. I must admit I rather enjoyed this show and it was a great and friendly crowd for the lens of Street Fashion Sydney too. GORO on now with, CAL SINO // ZIGENDEMONIC //QUARTZVII // NERDGORE // SAMSON at M2 Gallery, Click Here for more details - on until the 17th of January.

UNIFORM By Joe Wilson & Chanelle Collier at Lilac City Studio.

Posters riffing on the ideographs of an IKEA instruction sheet. White plinths topped with packaged canvas boiler suits in clear plastic bags - complete with suffocation warnings - in a variety of languages. A logo, no it must be another art work, the word Uniform over a line drawing of a Unicorns head.. it all feels astonishingly familiar. Of course there are people milling around as one would expect at an art opening.

Some small square canvases on the wall, just canvas.. It has the feeling of a minimally decorated On-Trend Fashion showroom launch. As one moves deeper into the space - looking for the opening night bar - there is a white clothing rack, white table, a white curtained change room; and someone to help you to UNIFORM. It's artist Chanelle Collier, quite naturally wearing fashion's favourite colour.. black. The clothes rack is mostly empty, there are Logo'd canvas suit-bags folded on the table; waiting.. for the clothing of anyone who changes from their clothes into the Uniform for the next 24 hours, becoming part of the art.

The show is titled UNIFORM and uniform is the artwork, the logo, the leitmotif. The word Uniform above a simple line drawing of a Unicorn's head says it all; well maybe not quite all. It does however do exactly what a Logo is supposed to do, create an immediate visual connection with the Brands Identity art as you move into this multi layered installation and performative art work.

Decoration over substance, conformity over vision, the gallery as temple, the artist as seer, machine made, hand made, is it possible to be Uniform and Unicorn at the same time?

This is one of the first exhibitions I have seen in quite a while where I didn't find myself wondering if the work might not possibly be a triumph of technique and style (top shelf decoration) over creative vision and substance. So while I suppose everyone who did choose to wear a boiler suit for 24 hours is most likely on their way to Masters degree in Art; making the process a bit of an inside job. That certainly does nothing to undermine that this show asks real questions of what art is and what it means to be an artist; and covers a lot more VERY unpopular creative ground. Really, when was the last time you saw art that challenged you to think about what is going with the world, with life, and how that fits with art? Uniform addressed a lot of ideas (mostly with a sense of fun and wit) that I have only very sketchily scratched the surface of here. The photographs below are a chronological documentation of the opening night of a three day show that I hope describe more than I have put into words above.
