Head On Photo Festival & The Fujifilm X100F

It's now the last week of the 2019 Head On Photography Festival here in Sydney. Thanks to Head On and Fujifilm Australia I have been sponsored with the fabulous X100F to document openings and well; whatever from the festival catches my eye. I've seen quite a few shows. I sat in on about 10 artists talks at the Head On Hub - and I certainly would not have attended quite so many if I had not wanted to document the photographers speaking - and that was a HUGE bonus as it was a really wonderful experience hearing these talented artists talking about their work. Put these talks on your list for next year; they are free, full of insights into photography, I just felt like I was getting topped up with ideas and inspiration. There are some more openings this week and of course, the HUB is still open with a lot of great work, shows are still up around town; get your skates on and check out as much as you can. I hit the Royal Botanic Gardens this afternoon, it was a beautiful sunny day here in Sydney! Mouse over the image for full details - click image to view larger. The Second Last Show at Stills Gallery - Glenn Sloggett and Jane Brown.

Yes you read that right; this wonderful exhibition of photography by Glenn Sloggett and Jane Brown is the second to last show at Stills which is to close at the end of June! You can read all about that and the future of the gallery space - photography please!! - here on Stills about page.

Down in the dumps by Glenn Sloggett and Sporting Country by Jane Brown are two complimentary shows, Glenn working with suburban ironies and oddities that only a truly quirky eye can deliver. Both are shooting film however Jane leaves the city altogether and with only black and white film loaded into her camera. Jane's images are those of rural Australian sporting places and the typical Australian-ness of those places. The moment I saw the small scale prints I knew immediately I was looking at superb hand made, wet bench prints on fibre based paper; and they literally sing! If you are part of the younger set shooting film for the first time I cannot recommend seeing this show and these prints enough. Stunning images and printed by Jane herself. Rumour is there will be a large group show to close out the space so keep your eyes and ears open for that. in the mean time, check out this show!

While you can view most of the work online; if you are in Sydney go see the real prints; its a whole different world of experience!

Art & Breast Awareness - KUDOS & M2 Galleries.

In the interest of avoiding upsetting anyone too much - one hopes, with our first post for 2017 - I will point out very early on that the awareness at the joint show at KUDOS was of a very different nature to the underground comix art type of breast awareness at the group show at M2 gallery. Space 1, KUDOS was (on NOW) Bec Litvan's BEAUTY AND THE BREAST; Painting, Photography, beautiful decorative Mastectomy Bras and a table of pearls as part of the installation. Bec told me the work was born out of the change she saw in her mothers personality after the breast cancer operation, the works are intended to bring back the beauty and a sense of the joys of life, and her mum modelled for the photographs in the show. Beautiful work. Scroll down to continue reading.

COLLUSIVE MISCELLANY by Amy Claire Mills, Bailee Lobb is not about breasts however it is a work performed in the nude so-to-speak, while interacting with the large wind blown fabrics which have themselves been manipulated through tying & heat - even the fans blowing did nothing to diminish the heat of this performance of which there are to be three more iterations; Live performances in space 2 : Saturdays 14, 21 & 28 January, 1-2pm. Check it out!

Was it a strange coincidence to be at M2 the very next night? GORO a group show of five artists who, as mentioned above are very much in the style of the underground Comix of the 70's & 80's; think Charles Burns, Robert Crumb & H R Giger but with an Aussie-Goth/Surf Culture tie in.. And the breasts? Well of course, Dominatrix style and plenty of them. I must admit I rather enjoyed this show and it was a great and friendly crowd for the lens of Street Fashion Sydney too. GORO on now with, CAL SINO // ZIGENDEMONIC //QUARTZVII // NERDGORE // SAMSON at M2 Gallery, Click Here for more details - on until the 17th of January.
