Vivid Sydney 2013 - Street Fashion Reportage-Style with the Fuji X-Pro1

What a difference a year makes! Last year when shooting the Vivid Light Festival I went all Old Skool with tripod and filters and tricky exposures but this year, shooting with the Fuji X-Pro1 I decided to go all reportage-style and put my focus, and the fabulous Fuji's 35mm lens on the people attending vivid and their interactions with the Vivid event itself. All the pictures were made with Fujifilm X-Pro1, XF35mmF1.4 R iso at 3200 and giving a little extra pop using the  EF20 Flash set at-1. Camera in aperture priority mode, most shots at F2. With the camera set all I had to do was find my subjects and photograph them; which was not that tricky once I got going. Yes one certainly needs some confidence but I do think the Fuji X-Pro1 looks so different that the very camera itself  'cuts you some extra slack in a crowd'  and I didn't get too many strange or agro looks. Nice! Hope you like my take on Vivid Sydney 2013..

Oh; and since I made so many landscape pictures, and at 600 pixels wide the blog here does not quite do justice to the finer details.. so I have also put a complete set of the images at 1600 pixels wide on Flickr here. Yes view the BIG Versions HERE.

Subculture Slam - Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre - Art Fashion Culture!

Last night I had the pleasure of speaking about this very blog - Street Fashion Sydney - at the Subculture Slam at Casula in Western Sydney.  I was one of four speakers along with Artists Stuart Bailey and Harrison Earl and Australian Deer Hunting Association President John Mumford - yes hunting is a subculture; bet you didn't know that!

All four speakers gave a 6ish minute talk while we showed 20 slides of our work in a  Pecha Kucha style presentation. Both Stuart and Harrison have work currently on exhibition at the gallery and it was a real treat listening them talk about their work, influences and art process. I spoke about the same sort of things I suppose but from a Street Fashion perspective and threw in a bit of the history of the blog and my thoughts about how we can influence our culture through writing and photography. John spoke about the history of hunting from cave dwelling times onward and the hunters role as environmentalist, as he said - "I'm probably going to be the most challenging speaker tonight." And I think he probably was in a controversial kind of way..

After the event I managed to photo-bomb the tidy up as the legally obtained milk-crates were returned to another part of the gallery and grab some fresh Street Fashion shots. Love the white blouse under the blue denim smock, black tights and laced boots; and who, I do mean who could resist a SAVE FERRIS Tee shirt teamed blue jeans, black boots and bag and those fab curly locks of hair!  Not me that's for sure. And last but not least Slam organiser Michael Do in a classic all black get-up and a fine looking Fedora!

A huge thank you to Director Kiersten Fishburn who MC'd the evening; event organiser Michael Do, everyone at Casula Powerhouse and my fellow speakers for making the Subculture Slam such a wonderful night.

And one last note; this inner city boy discovered just how easy it is to get to the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, just get on the train for a hassle free 45 minute ride to a great art space and great art.

Street Style at Central Station - Winter Begins Layering Wins..

Well it was a few hours to go before Winter officially began down-under when I took this picture last night. Problem is; it was more like a balmy spring night but as you can see from this picture no-one in Sydney is trusting it to stay warm and so at the moment, when heading out at night layering is the way to go - the Duffel Coat on our man and the all black ensemble topped with a leather jacket and  large and colourful scarf on our lady. Winter begins, layering wins. Photographed  at Central Station Platform 25, Sydney.

Nude Nails on the Train & other style shots from Autumn Nights..

There are always pictures that I take that for one reason or another didn't quite make it into a blog post even though I wish they had. And I do think these pictures deserve a run on Street Fashion Sydney; even if they did not quite fit with the stories on or about the time they were taken. So here they are, from painting your nails on the train, and who doesn't.. to Korean guys with their grocery shopping at Town Hall Woolies to a couple of 'No Publicity' type shots, some blurry shoes and a Camo jacket over a very nice black frock. All night shots too which is rather nice!

As we Head-On into Winter - Photography and Colour Win..

Lets face it, Summer was not that hot this year in more ways than one; so it's nice to see the colours of Summer 'working-it' for a visually more interesting Winter. And if my post-show late-night walk home last night was anything to go by Winter is pretty much upon us. Yes there will still be basics in black, wear them with style of course and you can't go wrong. But add a little colour and you will brighten more than just your own day you will be brightening other peoples worlds as well!

Green Duffel coat, mustard cable knit jumper, jeans and canvas shoes - South American weave jacket and bag with black jeans - colours of Winter.

Colourful print scarf, black tee shirt, purple and blue Adidas backpack.

Vibrant coloursed jacket, black skirt light green tights and dark green suede low cut boots - winter colours.
And while winter is nearly here, the Head On Photo Festival has certainly arrived, it's on right NOW and is going gang busters already. I started my art-week at Danks Street on Wednesday night for the Head-On Add-On show and Michael Cook's 'Hear no.. see no.. speak no..' exhibitions.

Thursday night was a look in at James Powditch at Australian Galleries, I do yes I really do love a good bit of industrial constructivism in salvaged Masonite and other industrial timber bits and pieces and colours - Painting and  a Video & some great winter fashion colour crowd at Sarah Cottier - then Floral Portraits by Hugh Stewart at Mick (the gallery), part of the Head on photo festival. And tonight is the festival launch and the Portrait prize, where it all began - see you there!
