Artists at their opening - A reluctant St. Peter & Simonology..

Two art shows last night, obsolete logos by Peter Atkins at Martin Browne Contemporary and STEREOGENIC by Simonology at Black Eye Gallery. I first met Peter two years ago at his Jazz show, also at Martin Browne and soon after we became Facebook friends. I have to say, seeing Peter's photos he takes and posts on the subjects that inspire him, from minimalist #‎readymadeabstraction‬ gararge doors to design finds at Camberwell Market it's been a very inspiring journey for me too, what an eye this man has. He brings it all together in the obsolete logos paintings and found object constructions Rosalie's Alphabet & Journal, 2014;  what a lot of things go on in Black Street!!! Of course I can never resist making a saint of an artist when their artwork is ready to oblige, thank you Peter, I hope you like the new portrait, thanks for sharing your inspirations and thanks for a great show.

Simon/Simonologies STEREOGENIC exhibition is totally new experience for me and I enjoyed the large works both with and without the stereoscopic glasses, the smaller line drawing(?) photographs I actually preferred with glasses off, the blue and red hues so enjoyable in and of themselves, and they disappear with the glasses on!

Art, The Universe, The Meaning of Everything - Not Too Bad!

It's always interesting how not-quite-random events coupled with a little free association can deliver a whole new interpretation of something that was not, one supposes curated in that way, or to be more specific with that interpretation in mind. But these things happen and on Thursday evening what was happening at Martin Browne Contemporary was two artists; McLean Edwards for "Local Heroes", fictitious Character portraits (or are they) and Lucas Grogan with "Wizdom". Make what you will of Grogan's Mandala-esque PENIS and Tantric meditation and dream sequences around the PENIS all done in white on blue, blue balls anyone.. there was a regular stream of viewers being drawn deeply into into his artwork "A Pale Blue Dot" which invisible micro penises aside (I didn't see any here) truly is a beautiful work that stands, or seems/seemed to stand out as a window to a mediation on the universe.

And this is where a little free association becomes interesting as the partnered exhibition is by an artist who has chosen to date his artworks by his age rather than In The Year Of Our Saviour XXXX AD.. and that year this year so it would seem, is 42.

Art Month Sydney - P-arty on Dudes.. Paddington/Woollarah

The first of six Art Month Sydney parties - in conjunction with galleries in six 'Art Precincts' kicked off last night. Street Fashion Sydney took in four galleries in the Paddington/Woollahra precinct which was really just the tip of the iceberg of the art in Paddo/Woollahra and all the art happening this month. My art walk started with photography at Stills Gallery, moved on to Martin Browne Contemporary then a little further up the street to Roslyn Oxley 9 (which if you did not know better you may have mistakenly thought was hosting the official precinct art party) - back out into  Roylston Street and the now darkening evening for my first look at the all new glossy-floored-light-cube that is Sarah Cottier Gallery. And finally back up the hill a little way to Mick Gallery, Geoff Dyer's 'Lake Country' paintings and the official art bar for Paddington. In every gallery there was not only great art, there was also great fashion and style on show; which after all is what Street Fashion Sydney is all about..

Neil Frazer at Martin Browne & Lindy Lee at Roslyn Oxley9

I do like that Martin Browne Contemporary and Roslyn Oxley9 galleries have taken to holding their art openings on the same evening; seeing as how they are just 100 meters apart down near Trumper Park Oval in Paddington it makes it very very easy to catch two great shows on the one night with surprisingly little effort. And although this is the first time I have posted about Martin Browne I have caught the last three shows thanks to this conjunction of opening nights. Last night it was the turn of Neil Frazer and his show 'Breaker', Coastal Landscapes/Seascapes of quite incredible intensity and a kind of hyper realism. It was a huge show filling all three gallery rooms at Martin Browne, 38 works in all and, the sales dots seemed to be popping up all over the place which I always think is a good thing.

Lindy Lee's show 'One Billion Worlds' although close by was worlds away conceptually - well at least I think it was; abstractions cut from stainless steel sheet, very abstract although very regulated too by the size and shape of the sheet material the works were made from. Mind you; I did think that the heavy paint work on the cliffs of Neil's works (if you cropped in tight and looked at just that part) was very much like a 1950's kind of abstract work, so perhaps the two shows are not so conceptually far apart at all.. its all in how you look at it. Both lovely shows, do drop in and take a look; & I have two new Artists at their opening portraits for my collection.

I also took in the 17th Annual 6x6x6 Inch Miniature Sculpture Show at Defiance Gallery; 120 tiny beautiful sculptures from 80 artists, quite a crush so no pictures I'm sorry; but well worth a look if you are in the Newtown/Enmore area.
