Is it Art? Or is it an Art Handbag Abstraction?

Friday night I popped into Sarah Cottier Gallery in Paddington for the current double header show, John Spiteri in gallery 1 and Huseyin Sami showing in gallery 2. As much as I enjoyed the abstract canvases in gallery 1; it was the thick and colourful slumped-vinyl-paint 'canvases' of Huseyin's works that really caught my eye. Why? Well initially I liked the idea that there were these handbag-like artworks on the wall in rather nice colour schemes (or colorways as they now say in the design/fashion trade (I have so have never liked that term))... And, after I had been introduced to Husyin I asked him if he would mind if I referred to the works as 'Art Handbags', he sort of laughed and smiled. Thank you Husyin for humouring me and thank you for your show 'The art of ending a conversation'. Well I wonder what that's about!  Anyway, I loved the show and our man was charming and there's my portrait below too; it's on now until the 2nd of August.

Australian Men's Style - The 'Patchwork' Flannelette Shirt.

International readers of Street Fashion Sydney may not be aware that there is a traditional national dress for Australian men; this typically consists of a Flannelette shirt, blue 'wife beater' singlet, a pair of shorts (it's hot down under) and a pair of thongs aka flip flops or Havaianas - expensive thongs; and of course thongs are footwear not underwear, which for men can be optional. I still recall my friend David Gofton opining that every Australian suburb or region ought to have its own distinctive Flannel pattern not unlike the Scott's and their Tartans for different clans. I'm still inclined to think this is a pretty good idea and a bit classier than people running amuck in 'local' Rugby League footie jerseys..

Last night at Sarah Cottier Gallery I spied this young man sporting what I took to be an arty interpretation on the Flannelette shirt redone in a quilted check pattern; Check, one two! Nicely teamed with deep blue black pants with some blue plimsolls. Love it, great personal style and as Aussie as it comes.

Art Month Sydney - P-arty on Dudes.. Paddington/Woollarah

The first of six Art Month Sydney parties - in conjunction with galleries in six 'Art Precincts' kicked off last night. Street Fashion Sydney took in four galleries in the Paddington/Woollahra precinct which was really just the tip of the iceberg of the art in Paddo/Woollahra and all the art happening this month. My art walk started with photography at Stills Gallery, moved on to Martin Browne Contemporary then a little further up the street to Roslyn Oxley 9 (which if you did not know better you may have mistakenly thought was hosting the official precinct art party) - back out into  Roylston Street and the now darkening evening for my first look at the all new glossy-floored-light-cube that is Sarah Cottier Gallery. And finally back up the hill a little way to Mick Gallery, Geoff Dyer's 'Lake Country' paintings and the official art bar for Paddington. In every gallery there was not only great art, there was also great fashion and style on show; which after all is what Street Fashion Sydney is all about..
